So - what is Sudoku and how did this gaming phenomenon come about?
Apparently - Sudoku was created by a guy called Howard Garnes - an American constructor in the 1970s - but it was in Japan where it became a sensation in the 1980s. And from there into a global onslaught. If Howard had known maybe he would have patented it.
The word Sudoku supposedly means placement puzzles. The best I can work out - Sudoku is a numerical game that is constructed on a grid of 9 rows, 9 columns and 9 boxes with 9 places each. Unlike some other number games, the Sudoku player does not need to have strong mathematical skills to solve the puzzle. Its more about patterns and relationships than mathematics. You just need to figure out the proper placements of each number.
The purpose of Sudoku is to place a number in each square. The restriction however, is that the numbers - 1 to 9 - can only be placed once in the column, the row and in each of the square per box. And though the rules don't appear to be as confusing as some games may be, this little catch makes the game all the more challenging!
Playing Sudoku can be a real challenge. The placing of each number on the grid sometimes appears random and yet there is only one correct pattern or number placement for each puzzle. So the Sukodu player must come up with the correct number for each square in order to achieve a correct final answer. Remember that every number is interconnected in a sudoku puzzle. One wrong turn and the player will have to repeat everything that he has done so far.
Depending on the Sudoku player skill level - game clues are available to start with. Every sudoku game will have numbers already placed to assist the player. The number of clues that are given to the player will depend upon the difficulty level that is being played. For instance, if the player is playing for the easy level or the beginner’s level, he will have more clues as compared to those who are already playing the expert’s games. I need as many clues as I can get...
One of the benefits of playing online is that most online versions of the game have checking devices
to help players check if their number choice has have been the correct one. This makes eventual solving of the puzzle easier and playing the game more satisfying.
